The Origins of the Gerry Deveau Hamster Web site are long, complex, and full of allegories, proverbs and lessons in life. It is a J.R.R. Tolkien style of tale, the Hobbit and Hamster share genes back in the dark ages, as we all know.
In 1999, in the spring, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers had a triennial convention in Ottawa, the Capital of Canada. At that Convention the Delegates from the "Ontario Region" elected a National Director named Gerry Deveau. There was much fanfare and joyous celebrations with this wonderful event. Gerry Deveau, was going to climb the mountain and slay the dragon, and bring peace to the Ontario Region. Gerry and his little band.After the festivities in the Capital City, Mike returned to his home in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. Upon returning he found that there was a new member of the household.
A HAMSTER ! ! ! ! !
Given this surprise, Mike called in a couple of markers, and exercised some authority (with approval of the Marlene) and named the Hamster, Gerry Deveau, in honour of his National Director. Mike is somewhat of a fanatic Union Representative with strange ideas like Gerry Deveau.
Gerry Deveau is a wonderful Hamster, and was quickly embraced by our family (and extended spin offs).
The news that a pet had been named after a Union Official that was elected gathered some interest in some areas, and a CULT was born, within the Union. Since then the Human Gerry Deveau has been given hamster treats, wheels, litter and Hamster Calendars adorn other Officers walls in tribute.
Our next hamster was named Toby, and I predicted that this meant at the next CUPW National Convention in 2002, that somebody named Toby would get elected to a National or Regional Office Position.
It would appear there are going to be a lot of changes at the next convention, as it appears in all likelihood, that Brandy, Strawberry, Blackie and Ruby will get Elected or Re-Elected.
Curly, Larry & Moe seem secure in their Regional Jobs. Dwarf Hamsters / Union Representatives don't vote like the Syrian Hamsters / Regional Executive Committee Members and National Officers.
This leaves questions as to who will Munchkin and Priscila replace? Now Emma and Victoria are older, close to retirement, and one of them needs a re-hab (due to one eye missing), so there may be a move to declare a couple of the Union Officers' Positions as Article 54 placements.
There is no truth to the rumour that we are buying two Dwarf Roborovskii's named Hansel & Gretel.
